As far as i know, the only updates you can download externally are ps system updates, which can be downloaded on a pc and copied onto a usb stick or external hard-drive and then installed. game updates, unfortunately, must be downloaded on your console. is your connection wired? if not, try a wired connection.. What about ps3 demos from the psn store? is it possible to download those onto the pc then transfer it to the ps3? using psproxy as described in the link above, yes. instead of putting game in to update, just start the download on the store for a few seconds, then cancel and follow the rest of the steps in link..
